I'm talking with several tree trimming services about trimming two big oak trees overhanging my house. So far, I've talked with 5 companies and prices are all over the place from $750 to $2000. One of my concerns is liability insurance. The most expensive guy has $2m but the rest have $1-200,000. Is there a "normal" or average amount these guys should have? Their reputations all seem to be good from reviews.

'Big Oak trees' are protected. According to how much 'trimming' is needed might require a permit. Before the chain saws start removing large branches, ask if a permit is needed.

Don't take their word on how much insurance coverage they have. Ask to see documentation.

Better would be to ask for the phone number of their insurance company/broker to determine if there is a current paid policy.

In Charlotte County you have to check with the county first before removing oak trees. Some types require a permit. We had two large oaks cut down and the county just looked on the aerial view and told us we did not need a permit for our type of oaks. We had Treemendous Trees cut down two oak trees, take away the entire tree and grind the stumps. We were very pleased with them. They cleaned up everything. They had a truck to the load the big pieces on and a wood chipper for the remainder. Very experienced and knew exactly what they were doing.
