The Glaxo Smith Kline antibody treatment works against Omicron. However Regeneron doesn't work good (against Omicron). This article sums it up:

GSK says its COVID antibody therapy works against Omicron. Here’s what other drugmakers say about their treatments

Here's a fact sheet about the EUA authorization for the Glaxo Smith Kline covid antibody treatment. It's authorized for high risk people with mild to moderate covid. It works best when given early and it doesn't work if a person is already hospitalized with covid (or on oxygen treatment):

This was an interesting study about Omicron. It showed that Omicron (compared to Delta) transmits 70 times faster in human bronchus - but spreads 10 times less in the lungs (compared to the original strain).

HKUMed finds Omicron SARS-CoV-2 can infect faster and better than Delta in human bronchus but with less severe infection in lung

https://www.med.hku.hk/en/news/press...ov-2-infection

A study led by researchers from the LKS Faculty of Medicine at The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed) provides the first information on how the novel Variant of Concern (VOC) of SARS-CoV-2, the Omicron SARS-CoV-2 infect human respiratory tract. The researchers found that Omicron SARS-CoV-2 infects and multiplies 70 times faster than the Delta variant and original SARS-CoV-2 in human bronchus, which may explain why Omicron may transmit faster between humans than previous variants. Their study also showed that the Omicron infection in the lung is significantly lower than the original SARS-CoV-2, which may be an indicator of lower disease severity.

"Here's an updated graph (log scale) of reported #COVID19 DEATHS during each wave in Gauteng, South Africa

Whilst absolute number of reported deaths in #Gauteng still low (8% of previous peak), the rate of increase remains high - currently doubling about ~11 days"

"United Kingdom with new all-time record of 88,376 cases (equivalent to 430K+ in US).

Deaths continue flat/declining.
Hospitalizations increasing, but well below levels of 7 wks ago.

This WILL result in more hospitalizations & deaths. But muted c/w outbreak."

Denmark expects omicron to overtake delta within a week. Here’s what that means for the U.S. and the world

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cnb...his-week-.html

- Omicron cases are doubling every two days in Denmark, with variant expected to overtake delta in the next week, according to the Statens Serum Institut in Copenhagen.

- The rapid spread of omicron in Denmark, where 80% of the population is vaccinated, is an ominous sign for the U.S.

- Dr. James Lawler, an infectious disease expert at the University of Nebraska, said the U.S. has just weeks to take action to stem omicron.

While the U.S. has not yet experienced an explosion of omicron cases as in Denmark, the variant is quickly gaining ground across America. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday reported that omicron represented 2.9% of sequenced Covid cases last week, up from 0.4% the week prior. Delta makes up about 97% of sequences Covid cases, according the CDC.

CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said on Wednesday that omicron may represent up to 13% of cases in states like New York and New Jersey.

Florida Covid-19 Hospitalizations

It's hard to get a read on current Florida covid hospitalizations because as of the time of this post the HHS hasn't updated their FL hospital totals since December 14th. I'm not sure why.

*Update: The HHS finally updated their covid Florida hospitalization totals for today. As of December 16 there are 1556 Florida covid hospitalizations. This represents a 10.27% increase since December 14th (when there were 1411 Florida covid hospitalizations). While this is the highest since November 9, it remains among the lowest censuses of any wave.

It is up 26% from nadir and 13% from one week prior.

Sarasota Memorial Hospital made a covid update today. It's hard to tell if any of their covid cases are from Omicron - because there is no sequencing data available publicly for these cases. I suspect a few might be Omicron.

Sarasota Memorial Covid-19 Hospitalizations

Total COVID inpatients today: 24 (25 yesterday)
COVID patients in ICU: 7 (4 yesterday)
