St. Regis Longboat Key Resort checks in with posh company on 2024 luxury hotel list

A Sarasota-area resort ranks amid posh properties nearing completion in such idyllic places as Cabo San Lucas, the Maldives, Thailand and a handful of Grecian isles on the Robb Report’s “50 Most Hotly Anticipated Luxury Hotel Openings in 2024."

The St. Regis Longboat Key Resort checks in at No. 38 on the uber-exclusive list of properties expected to open in the next 12 months. Immediately above the St. Regis Longboat Key: the Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island, Australia ($3,400 a night). Immediately below, a resort in Labuan Bajo, Indonesia.

“The only new St. Regis to open in the U.S. [in 2024] is coming to the white sands of a barrier island in the Gulf Coast off Sarasota," the list, published earlier this month, says. “The 18-acre project is a redevelopment of the former Colony Beach & Tennis Resort and is the largest project on the island in over 50 years."

The 17.3-acre site on Longboat Key has been under construction since 2021. When completed this summer, it will offer 166 rooms along with a range of restaurants topped off by the CW Prime Steakhouse. Outside, a saltwater lagoon will feature tropical fish and stingrays. Additionally, a bar will pay homage to the Colony’s famous Monkey Bar.

Manatee County Restricts Public Input on Social Media

For full article:

https://thebradentontimes.com/storie...al-media,71074

Some Manatee County residents are not happy about a recent change to the Manatee County Government’s social media pages that restricts the public's ability to engage on posts made by the county. The county’s social media pages have traditionally allowed members of the public to leave public comments on posts, but in late December, the commenting feature was restricted on the county's Facebook, Instagram, and “X” (formerly known as Twitter) accounts.

The change to eliminate the public forum has not only impacted Manatee County Government’s main social media accounts but in the days following the change being made on the county’s main pages, additional sub-accounts of the organization were also impacted. The Manatee County Public Safety Department page, Manatee County’s Public Library System’s page, and the county’s Animal Welfare page have also all seen the public’s ability to comment on official posts restricted.

TBT was first made aware of the change when multiple residents reached our publication frustrated by what they felt was an act of “censorship”—some even questioning whether the action was legal.

In defining bars and clubs, city asks: Do restaurants need kitchens?

The city's proposed zoning definitions of downtown restaurants, bars and nightclubs would affect those establishments' operations, hours and outdoor seating.

Sometimes simplification can be complicated.

What began as an exercise to simplify the definitions of drinking and dining establishments in downtown turned into nearly a year of public engagement sessions and hours of discussion during a previously tabled public hearing and subsequent workshop.

Still, the Sarasota City Commission could not reach a consensus about some nuances of a zoning text amendment proposed to provide clearer definitions of restaurants, bars and nightclubs in the downtown zone districts.

In a split decision, commissioners by 3-2 and 4-1 votes approved two zoning text amendment ordinances on first reading, with modifications, that define those businesses independent from the definitions used by state liquor licensing.

Big year ahead for $132M aquarium project in Sarasota County corridor

The project, shaped like a seaworthy ship, nears final stages of construction.

The Mote Science Education Aquarium will be 110,000 square feet. Interior work will speed forward approximately in July.

For full article:

One of the biggest non-residential condo construction projects in years in Sarasota County is primed to set sail by the end of 2024.

The project is the $132 million Mote Science Education Aquarium, or Mote SEA. It's being built near University Town Center and Nathan Benderson Park in north Sarasota, near the border with Manatee County.

The area has been a hub of commercial activity of late. Among the new additions: a Tesla dealership is under construction at UTC; a new Trader Joe's grocery store opened a few months ago across the street; and also across University Parkway a coming soon sign is in place for a Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar.

Bottom line

Key takeaway: Construction of the Mote Science Education Aquarium facility in north Sarasota County is expected to be complete by around Thanksgiving.

Core challenge: The next 10 months will be something of an orchestra of project management, including placing 6,800 metal panels on the exterior — one at a time.

What's next: After it obtains a certificate of occupancy, it will take about three or four months for the wildlife to acclimate to the 1 million gallons of water.

The City of Bradenton and the developer of Vias at Bradenton moved forward to build a 20-floor mixed-use luxury condo tower on the downtown land that is home to city hall today. WSLR News reporter Ryan Stanley has more on that.

Ryan Stanley: A draft term sheet unveiled by Bradenton City Administrator Rob Perry at Wednesday’s council meeting outlines key details of a preliminary development agreement between the City of Bradenton and Vias at Bradenton LLC.

The proposed development, which spans four acres along the Manatee River, includes city hall and the Bradenton Police Department and is set to undergo a comprehensive transformation into what is expected to be a mixed-use space with luxury condo, hotel, and commercial components.

Perry addressed the council to explain the process going forward.
