Hi all,

I'm coming through Savannah in the next few weeks and saw good reviews of "Sisters of the New South" soul food restaurant.

I've never been to Savannah but heard that it is both wonderful and, at times, difficult.

As we are coming in 100% tourist mode (i.e. with two kids and older mother-in-law) we have to pick locations that are family/tourist friendly.

Is Sisters in an area I can feel generally safe and laid back?

Not a lot of whites frequent this place (having no idea what race you are), so you may get "looks" by the regulars. This part of town (Skidaway & Victory) is so-so, safety-wise.

If you are worried about safety but want similar type food and pricing "Sweet Potatoes" is in a much more commercial area. It is further out south from the touristy area of Savannah right on Waters Avenue. Should be easy to find and very safe. I see white people at Sisters lots, but they are local whites if that makes a difference I don't know.

We have a mutty, mixed race family, but probably come off as Hispanic and generally speak a lot of Spanish amongst each other.

Not sure how the balck-hispanic dynamic is in the Savannah area....

I'm totally 100% cool with a majority black establishment, provided they are fine with us. In fact, I'd enjoy it.

But again, the last thing I want on this trip is any issue of any sort.

Wasn't that the one Andrew Zimmerman went to?

Yes. The area is one in which you can feel generally safe and laid back.

And just for your information....Savannah has a large mixed race population.

Sisters is in a fine area. I'm a white guy and never have any problems with black people in this city -- particularly black women. When they say, "Have a blessed day Sugar!" I reply, "You too, Sweetie!" and everything remains right with the world.

A visit to Sisters is like going to your grandmothers house for Sunday dinner.

You shouldn't have any problems there. It's a mutty neighborhood -- but not in a bad way. I recommend trying both restaurants, if you're here long enough. Have fun.

I don't get the local infactuation with Sweet Potatoes; portions are small and prices high. "Southern Gourmet" just doesn't do it for me. My mother, aunts and grandmother can all cook much better and for a lot less.
