This could potentially lead to a regional express bus system..

So when are we getting a T or a metro?

I was always a bit tempted to hop on hobo-style to the freight train when it slowed down by my neighborhood..and hitch a ride to downtown! Imagine if they had the train stop in W. Chatham every morning and evening and could drop commuting workers off downtown where the trains switch tracks, or at the current Amtrak. I heard the Amtrak used to be right downtown, too.

Also I never understood why the new bus station was called intermodal, all it is for is busses. Hook it to Amtrak, then you've got something. Bonus point: create a little mini-ferry that goes up the canal right to the transit center, and goes to Rousakis Plaza. Now that's a pipe dream, but it sounds neat right? Mass transit brings out the SimCity fan in me.

Regarding regional busses, we'll see. I like the Park n Ride idea. But I heard the other counties don't like to cooperate with ours.

Effingham don't get much cooperation from Savannah/Chatham supporting the Effingham Parkway.

This is something I have wanted for Savannah for a long time. Some kind of rail system that transported locals and tourists alike between Downtown, the airport, Tybee and the South side. Alas, the populace is much too conservative to even think so progressively toward the future and alternative modes of transport. Also, I'm sure many would think the costs would outweigh the benefits. Many fail to think of the tourists or sales tax could be a potential funding source.

It may just be for buses, but those buses aren't exclusively CAT buses. As far as I know, it's also for Greyhound. Amtrak isn't far from downtown either. Right off 516.

Sad, but true. Never understood this because support for a limited access highway between Chatham and Effingham would also greatly help Chatham's traffic issues at 95. Another good example of political short sightedness. Regionalism is where it's at for our future. The sooner everyone realizes this, the better off we, our children and our children's children will be. And so on.

Once again, we should consider a system like Toronto - obviously a much denser downtown than Savannah, but their above-ground trams (they also have a subway and buses) are a model for Savannah to investigate. I still think it's the right mode of public transit for Savannah - a much more proliferated system than the stupid poor-people-conveyance-to-work solution that the current proposal puts on the table. The trams run right with traffic - rails inlaid in the asphalt. We don't need to widen any streets or pave any new territory. They would just need to lay some rails in a few streets and run some power lines overhead. The cost of the cars are the only other capital expenditure required. Running them through Ardsley and including service to the hospitals (two of the top five employers in the whole county) would also offer better commuting options, and maybe allow for a parking space to be open at Memorial every once in awhile.
