Default Thinking about Savannah

I was born in Savannah, Ga in the mid-80's. Of course I can't remember what it was like, but my mom said she adored the city. Now I am thinking about buying a home there, but I'm hearing some terrible things about the place. Why? What is so bad about it? Is there a lot of crime? Is it unsafe for certain people? Is it just the weather? I mean what is it exactly?

The homes are very cheap and the I spent a few days there and saw nothing wrong with it.

Someone help me

The crime has a lot to do with the poverty. There is ALOT of poverty in Savannah, yet there are also a lot of beautiful homes too. But you can be on a nice block and then go one street over and it will be bad. I live on the edge of a nice neighborhood yet my home got broken into and my valuables stolen. I lived downtown in a nice neighborhood yet my car window got smashed even though there was nothing left in the open. I've heard of people who will be driving and someone jumped on there car with a gun. I've heard of people being stood up at gun point on there OWN front porches. Because of this crime, the south has made me racist. I hate that, but it's unfortunately true and many people I know feel the same way....

The crime is really really sad here for such a nice place. It will drive me out of Savannah as it has many others. It has nothing to do with the weather. People visit Savannah for a weekend or few days and they absolutely love it but they aren't here long enough to see the reality. I've been here almost 4 years and I'm ready to leave. Houses may be cheap but think I'd think twice before buying...
