Default Savannah Private Schools

We are moving to Savannah with 2nd and 5th graders. What are the reputations of Savannah Christian and Savannah Country Day? We're trying to figure out schools and can move pretty much anywhere within an hour of Savannah. Is it too late to apply for the magnet school that was mentioned earlier? What is it called? It looks like school starts mid-August. We just found out today, so that doesn't give us much time. If money and traveltime were no object (which they are, but I want to aim high!) where would you live?
Thanks!
A panicking mom

5th graders are NOT housed at Mercer Middle School, I teach at Mercer and we have always been a 6-8 building. Pt. Wentworth elementary is ok, but suffers from the same problem most of the elementary schools do which is not preparing 5th graders for middle school. We have kids who are way below grade level, especially in math, when they hit 6th grade. Our principal is a non nonsense kinda person, who runs a tight tight ship.

If you are looking at the private elementary and middle schools, and are considering parochials, there are a couple of others to look at:

Catholic:
Blessed Sacrament School - Savannah, Georgia - Blessed Sacrament School
Saint James Catholic School of Savannah, Georgia - St. James School

Presbyterian:
St. Andrew's School - St Andrews

Baptist:
Memorial Day School - HOME - Memorial Day School
Calvary Day School - Calvary Day School

I'm sure there are others I'm missing.

Here is a link to the GA Dept of Education site and the Report Card (I preselected Chatham County) Georgia Department of Education (http://www.doe.k12.ga.us/ReportingFW.aspx?PageReq=102&CountyId=625&T=1&FY=2 008 - broken link).

I also use greatschools.com to get some insight on what other parents have to say about the schools (of course always reading with an open mind).

In addition reading through all the threads on this forum (anything titled moving to...) will give you some insight to what others have to say.

The Highlands is a very nice area. It is a planned community, with walking trails, community pool and close to Pooler shopping. You can always call the local police department to get a crime report for that area. In addition, ask your Realtor to provide you information on what has sold in the neighborhood (6-12 months) to see what the trend has been for sales, resales and banked owned properties.

Good luck with your move.
