Was just looking at real estate in St. Marys. A LOT for sale and a LOT in foreclosure. Any idea what is going on? Is the Navy Base closing? Insurance rates? It is a small community all things considered. Was considering it as a retirement location.

No, King's Bay is not closing; at least there is no indication of it in the media. I can only speculate that if it appears that St. Marys has a relatively high number of houses on the market, it's because of the transient nature of a town whose biggest employer is a Naval Base.
Don't let this impression dissuade you from considering St. Mary's. It really is a lovely and historic community that is convenient to other great venues ie Jacksonville beaches, Amelia Island, Jekyll Island, St. Simons Island and Savannah.
BTW, hope you like seafood!

The Navy base is not closing and will not be closing for the next 50 years. It is the home of the East coast's Ohio class submarine fleet & has all the support facilities for them. The issue is the only economy in St. Mary's is the Navy & small businesses which is why the economy down there is hurting. Also add in most young people under 30 want to live in a large city in a vibrant downtown core neighborhood & this is what is happening to smaller towns & cities. People get older & die, there is no one to replace them, it's happening all over the US in smaller communities.

St Mary's has always impressed me as a sane place in an insane world. Good location.
