I'd never heard of SSI before HGTV did the dream home there. It looks like a fantastic place!

If we actually won the HGTV home, we'd have to sell it for taxes (I saw an estimate of over $700,000 Fed and Georgia income tax due, plus more for my home state), but it looks like there are some very affordable homes scattered all over the island.

One I was looking at in particular sounded great--.6 acres, 3 bedrooms/2 baths for $190K. Then I looked at the pictures and saw iron bars on all the windows.

I had this idea that SSI was all kind of upscale resort-y. Are there "bad" neighborhoods?

We're thinking of renting first, of course, not buying into a new area sight unseen.

thanks!
Lee

It is a lovely place.
And I'd like to see this listing to determine whether it's really in zip code 31522. I can't imagine anywhere on the island where even land value for .6 acres would go for 190K.
No, there are no bad neighborhoods whatsoever on SSI.

EDIT: Never mind, I think I found it.

Highly problematic location for a residence, and right on the island's main drag. No doubt destined to be a teardown, and probably in favor of commercial development.

yup, that's the one, built the year I was born.
Lovely lot, gorgeous trees, but I wouldn't want to be on a busy road.

Thanks for the explanation/education!

Future convenience store. It's right across the street from the Red Barn, the Elder Statesman of SSI restaurants.

Beautiful trees, the rest looks pretty dumpy from what the photos show. I have a neighbor that owns a home out by the beach, it is definitely a really cool little island!
