I am 23 years old and am thinking about moving to the Savannah area next summer. I want to live in an area that is somewhat young and active. I love sports, the beach, outdoor stuff, etc. I love going to church so I hope to meet new people in the church. I am a middle school math teacher so it would be great to find a good school to teach at that is within a reasonable distance to a disirable place to live for a young professional.

Any suggestions would be wonderful! Thanks all!

Coastal Middle School on the Whitmarsh/Wilmington Islands school district would suit you very well. You need to apply to the Chatham-Savannah Board of Education.

There are also a couple of private or parochial on the Islands.

Oglethorpe Charter School
Georgia’s first start-up charter middle school. OCS is an official Core Knowledge School, it is near downtown the place to live for a young professional.

Thank you. I really appreciate the reply. Do you know of any good public middle schools. The south definitely does not have a great reputation for education which is not fair because it is a different culture. It is definitely not because good teachers are hard to come by either. It is just a different culture. That being said are there some good middle schools in the area. I ask that because I am only a first year teacher from Ohio and I still need to be in a school that performs best practices so I can get better. It would be different if I had 10 or 20 years of experience.

I suggest you check out this site:

Savannah-Chatham County, Georgia Public Schools

It is the official site for the public school system.

The reason I suggest that you check out the Coastal Middle School (it is a public school) is that it is in an area of a lot of young adults. There is also numerous churches of every denomination. A very active YMCA facility with many adult activities. The Wilmington/Whitmarsh Island area has a lot of good housing. It is on the way to Tybee Beach.

However, if you were placed in one of the west side middle schools, you would have a long commute and you might be happier living in Pooler, which is a suburb type town close to Savannah. You would still be in the same Chatham-Savannah school district.

Middle school here is 6-7-8 grades.

Thanks I sure do appreciate that. I have actually already looked at that website and have all the state report cards for the schools in Chatham County. What are the odds of getting hired. I am 23, male, and I would be willing to coach. Plus I am a very active professional. I have presented at national, state, and collegiate conferences. Does Coastal Middle Schools make many new hires each year?

Middle school math teacher and male? Your odds are good for getting hired at one of the schools, though I'm not sure about Coastal Middle School. You should probably write a letter of interest to the principal and start a professional relationship now.

Cool thanks for the advice. Do you know where I might be able to find information on job fairs?
