Oh, my face is so red after that answer. Transportation should be less in your area with all the ships. Maybe it is because the tourists will pay the prices. The warehouse membership still sounds good though. Do you have them there. Your pies are expensive too. I paid more than $20 for one. I would hate to do that on a daily basis. If I lived where you do, I would probably never have to buy groceries because I would never eat at home.
Savannah's ports are primarily not a port of entry for foodstuffs. You'll find that mostly at the Gulf Coast ports. Most tourists don't go to grocery stores, so I don't think that's the answer either.

I think it's a combination of tranportation costs & the size of our town. Most small cities/large towns have lower costs due to the "supercenter effect". Larger cities, on whole, have lower costs due to economies of scale & competition. Mid sized cities are stuck in the middle.

NCN: $20 for a pie? Guess I will be learning how to make one when I get there, because I think that's highway robbery to pay that much--unless it's something extra special. Whew...high prices for pie there.

I just have to ask....20 bucks for a pie? What kind was it? Did it come from one of our specialty bakeries? I sure hope it was worth it.

We are usually satisfied with the Mrs. Smith's Pies in the freezer case. Not all are good, but they satisfy the warm, sweet cravings.

I'm glad you jumped in with the question about price and specialty bakeries.
That's all I could think of too.
Kroger's, PUBLIX, and I'm sure the rest, have bakeries in store.
Their pies work just fine for me.
And the most I ever paid was $7.99...
for a Sweet Potato Pie.
I like Mrs. Smith's too.

LOL true, or one of Paula Deans. Incredible people are talking about high grocery prices and the example is pies.

The price of everything just went up for me, I got laid off. I still have a month left, some of you may know of this. What a bad time to look for a new job. Makes me want to forget infotech and go back to painting houses.
No, I dont find the prices high. Except for Pubix. We grow alot of stuff and freeze it.

Probably a torte. Things cost more when you "french-ify" them!
