It's interesting: I'm guessing that once you're here looking around, all your expectations might get shattered. What I mean is: Somebody posts something about a certain place, and you put stock in it, but there's a strong possibility you won't see things the same way. Me, I happen to like Burien for the most part. But I also like Des Moines. Don't rule it out cause one or two posters said " It's ghetto."
See it for yourself. The Des Moines waterfront is very nice, and the place has this quaint small town feel , but if you don't like it, you don't like it. I live in Renton and like it....and being Mexican, Filipino, and Black with a red haired Irish fiance? You should fit right in.

Well that's good to know lol, honestly I don't think my expectations will get shattered UNLESS I move anywhere in Washington that is anything like Vegas. Then your suicide rate shall definitely go up. After researching Burien and a few other places I get a great feeling about Burien and feel like it will be a nice place to live until we get more familiar with the Evergreen St. I also like the easy commute from Burien to downtown Seattle considering I wanted to move to Seattle but my fiance said otherwise. I also love the annual events Burien offers. Of course I would take into consideration anything you lovely people would recommend because your where I want to be so I definitely appreciate any suggestions (:

It's really not a 15 minute drive from Burien to downtown unless you go after 10pm and before 6am. Part of that drive was on the highway 99 viaduct which they are in the process of taking down for the new waterfront bypass tunnel. I drive between the waterfront and airport often and it's a real mess.

Have you looked north of Seattle? Look at Edmonds, Shoreline, Lake Forest Park. You really need to come out and spend a few days before deciding on a place. We made multiple trips over two years before deciding on where to move here and we had relatives here to help.

That's really great information to know because the 15 - 20 minute drive to DT Seattle had me set on Burien because we will be going there frequently but not after 10 p.m. How long do you think it will be under construction? We won't be there until the 1st of May. We're actually planning to live in Tukwila for a month at Extended Stay America until we find something. We don't want to be out there like chickens with our heads cut off so I'm just trying to get as much info as I can about a few places so we know where to look and where not to look. Burien just sounds like a winner but thank you for your suggestions, my research begins now.

That road project will last until 2016. basically take an already crowded highway at 50 mph 3 lanes each direction and make a detour at 25-40 mph and only 2 lanes, add big trucks and trains and it's not quite the same. From Tukwila even worse, but you can catch the light rail into downtown. Look into an Orca pass. I took it a couple of times last week to the airport to avoid the traffic and it's pretty fast, and relaxing. You can get off at the International District, Pioneer Square, University Avenue, or Westlake which is 3 blocks walk to Pike Place Market.

Well, the thing of it is, Burien doesn't offer anything that can't be found in W. Seattle, Renton, Federal Way, Des Moines, Columbia City, et. c. Each cities got their events, festivals, et. c. And with a ~$2K budget, you can actually be in the nicer part of Seattle area. We're just saying, Hey, at least open your hearts to other cities. Your husband might not mind living closer to the DT area given how much greenery there is... and how much traffic there is (b/c seriously, traffic here... to use a LV reference.. is like driving in the Spaghetti bowl... in slo-mo). Its actually easy for us to tell you which part of Seattle not to be in because, really... there isn't that many areas.

Does Seattle have ANY parts like the Las Vegas strip? Inkpoe could you compare Las Vegas to Seattle? That would help us out a lot because Vegas is just too much for us and we don't want to be reminded of Vegas at all.

Heck no! Probably the closest would be Summerlin is a bit like the Bellevue suburbs... but even then there are stark differences (more character in Bellevue). There's absolutely nothing in LV that compares to Seattle and vice versa. Even when you then look to the boring same bland subdivisions... Exterior styles are waaay different (We do the PNW style here, you won't see stucco so much), you have a bit more yard, there's more community sense here. Even when you go to casinos here, its still different from going to the casinos in LV; everything here is so not ... beyond tacky and not crowded. You won't have people in Seattle trying to scam you on every corner and in the parking lot with some bogus/weird stories. Education is very valued here (and success is reflected accordingly), people are passionate here and yet very reserved and POLITE. Las Vegas hardly does Pride Parade and yet, it's a big thing here in Capitol Hill~~ its been done longer (almost 40 years) and has a much bigger crowd (whereas LV would be lucky if they get 10K, ours goes up in the hundred of thousands). Drivers are a bit better here than in LV-- you won't see very many drunk drivers here and the cops will actually pull them over (and do their jobs!).

Trees! Green! Water! Blue! Believe me... it's a different way of life. There's nothing here that is at all like Las Vegas.

That's awesome!! That's really awesome because we totally ruled out Seattle afraid of running into similar circumstances. Burien seemed really plain however that was fine with us we'll take that, anything that seems totally opposite of Vegas but to know we can actually move in Seattle and still have opposite of Vegas is awesome! Thank you!

Oh yea... also... You will like our DMVs here. Its been a couple years since I lived in LV, but I still twitch every time I think about having to go to the DMV in Las Vegas. I remember warning my husband about the DMV in LV... but he didn't believe me until he got to experience it himself. Definitely won't be an all day affair here.

People here are also much more professional as well.
