We moved to Seattle last March from San Diego for my husband's work. I absolutely love Seattle--the weather, the people, the Sound, the glass, the parks, the bakeries I especially love my little neighborhood in West Seattle. My children have thrived. Rain or shine we are always out and about exploring everything Seattle and it's environs have to offer.
My husband can't stand Seattle. Mostly, the lack of sun has really gotten to him. He is depressed and irritable. He has been taking 6000IU Vit D pills daily and he travels out of state quite frequently, but he has been planning our move back to SD almost from the first month we arrived.
I am sick to my stomach at the thought of moving back to San Diego. I completely understand your comment about the master planned communities and the Stepford thing--ugh!
From my experience, I think you can't go wrong raising children in North County San Diego (don't know if you have kids). What's not to like if your a little kid. I felt super safe and super bored there. Everything looks and feels shiny and new.
Seattle is more urban, grittier. There are potholes and homes and buildings are older and my husband says shabbier. I don't know anything about the Eastside except that it's more suburban and many people say safer.
We both came to Seattle with open minds. You just never know how your are going to feel until you come and live here a while.

I regretted my previous move to Seattle - but the regret had nothing to do with Seattle or its environs per se - I am now very disenchanted with southern California - but again not with the physical atttributes - like Seattle - it is more about the people and the political climate. I am longing to come back to Washington State - and likely will do so - rest assured fellow Washingtonians, I am not a typical Californian - but a former Washingtonian who is missing his home. I promise to not be a a drag(unless my politics really irritate you - but I can't help that - sorry)!.

I'm a Seattle native, but man, I came charging back to California with a vengeance as soon as I had the opportunity! Couldn't stand the weather or the general social scene. After about three months, I regretted my decision to move, and never regretted my decision to leave.

My friend who moved up with me and was my roommate, a native Angeleno, likes Seattle. She's been there for three years now, had a boyfriend but they just broke up, and has a couple friends up there. The weather doesn't bother her much, though she's totally sedentary (she was very athletic down here). She pines for a lot of things in Socal, but she'll probably be up there for a very long time if not forever.

Socal and Seattle are near-polar opposites in many if not most ways. Even if you're "fed up" with Socal, you may not find what you're looking for in Seattle, and may end up realizing you're a lot more of a Southern Californian than you thought you were (as was the case with me).

No, I am not. I lived in Orange County for 5 1/2 years and I hated, the weather was warm but something about this place was dead. Some people told me that I was crazy when I started to pack my boxes and remind me that everyone in the US dream to live in OC , now I live 6 years in WA and I do not think OC bette then WA. WA state is Paradise and people here not as stucked up as in South CA. P.S. I had a difficult time to find a job in OC because I do not speak spanish, forget sick I already speak 3 languages in english speaking country why do I need a 4th in order to survive ?

Gypsy, I hope you don't mind me to be open with my opinion as you came here to share your topic and be open too. I think your husband is Big spoiled Baby, if you enjoy Seattle and your children too and he still wants to change living situation for all of you, because HE is not happy then it's something wrong with him and not with the Seattle. P.S. I think reall man would care more what makes his family happy instead of making everyone misrable because he has no patient for weather. May be he should go to Africa, it's sunny there all the time and see how people live there without water, food and in paverty and still much happier then he is.

Seattle is not for every Californian. Some like it , or even love it. Some hate it.

This is definitely a region where your personal likes come into play.

I would say that 75% end up liking it, and staying. The other 25% probably need to consider Texas.

I went to Downey High and my dad still lives in L.A. so I visit sometimes. No regrets at all, I'm glad to be out of there. The quality of life is very good in Seattle and it's less stressful. My good friend from high school lives here too, he's a musician and lives in Lake City in the north end.

I bought my first condo south of Seattle a few years ago. My wife and I are looking at new townhouses in Seattle proper now.

I am also very concerned about this topic. We are possibly contemplating a move but we are very happy with our current lifestyle in SoCal. We live a block away from the beach so we are used to having a good amount of sun, jogging paths along the beach, easy walk to the pier, etc. We open up our french doors to the balcony and are greeted with ocean breezes and a nice view.

It would be a major pain to get over there, find out we are miserable, and have to move back after quitting our jobs, selling our house, etc.

We have discussed it more and I think it is more likely now that if we do move we will rent out our house here and rent up there in Seattle just to make sure we're happy there. If we really do like it, we'll consider buying after 1 year. Seems like the smart thing to do for anyone who moves up there from SoCal.

It sounds like some people love it up there and some really have problems adjusting. I think I'll be ok since I lived in various places like Michigan, Asia, and NorCal but I've been in SoCal for the past 14 years (gee, time flies like crazy huh?) so I may be more used to this area than I think.

If you are happy where you are living, what is the reason for wanting to move?
