One thing to keep in mind if you head this way is how important sunlight is to you. You've heard about the rain, but in the winter time it isn't the rain so much as the gloom that affects people. In December, you'll have about 1 1/2 hours less of daylight than you have in Birmingham. It doesn't get light until 8:00 and it'll be dark by 5:00. This is a northern town. Add to that our typically overcast skies and low angle of the sun in winter and those days feel even shorter.

The low angle of the light in winter can make for some spectacular scenery, with the same golden feeling you might get at sunset at other times of the year.

You'll get that back in the summer, with very long days with 90 minutes more of light than you have in Alabama. We can't even start our major fireworks shows until at least 10:00 pm on the 4th, and it's even better to wait until 10:30.
