Seattle was known as the "Queen City" from the late 19th century until sometime in the 1980s.

It is simply an outdated moniker. I never cared for "emerald city" either. I always liked "Jet City", but it lost value during the Seattle depression in the early 70's, and perhaps now with the corporate move to Chicago plus the 787 problems, not the time to try to revive it. However, it does last with some Seattle brands, and of course, Queensryche's classic "Jet City Woman", one of their best.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. You all are great. I will take you up on the advice and concentrate on downtown. This is the only top 20 metro that I haven't been to surprisingly. Albeit, it's only for 24 hours I will have car access and can cover lots of ground.

Ironically Anthony Bourdain's show The Layover on the Travel Channel is in Seattle on Monday night. It's basically just him going to different cities and showing what to do for anywhere from 24 to 48 hours

It was Queen City before the name was changed to Emerald City back around 1990 more or less. That's where the QFC chain got its name: Queen Food Center. That's what I heard, anyway.

NY Times has a March 24, 2011, article in their "36 hours in..." series, focusing on Seattle.

I love that regular feature in ther travel section. Check out their archive for so many cites they've featured. Interesting and un, I would think.

LOL exactly what I was thinking. I imagined Queen Food Centers being a grocery store geared towards the gay community.

Back in the day the Capitol Hill QFC on Broadway had that nickname.
