Can anyone recommend a nice mid to upscale restaurant near the Pike Place market? Maybe seafood or American?

EDIT - its a gift for travelers who've never been to Seattle so if there's any touristy restaurants those could apply as well.

Cutter's and Etta's are well know, highly rated seafood (mostly) restaurants right in the Market. I personally love the Pink Door, but that's Italian.

Maximillian
Il Bistro
Etta's
Von's (relocated here and has a new concept...I haven't tried it yet but I hear good things)

Elliot Bay oyster house is not far and has lovely views as well. Cafe Campagne has very good French food, and Ettas is a local favorite. I also love the Pink Door, and a seat on their deck on a nice afternoon is delightful. They're not a seafood restaurant per se, but they do one of the best cioppino's I've had, and their risotto is in my top 5.

i always take the out of town guests over to elliott's. they are always happy with the oysters, salmon, etc.

when we're walking through pike place, i usually take them to a more casual place such as pike place chowder, beecher's handmade cheese, and one of the coffee shops for sandwiches.

Lowell's is great for breakfast, but for dinner I would suggest Anothony's at Pier 66, a short walk using the Lenora Street Skybridge and elevator. For lunch I like Six Seven at the Edgewater Pier 67, half a block north from Pier 66.

The Frontier Room around 1st and Bell has good barbecue, and is just a cool old place with neon.

Il Bistro, Etta's, Matt's, all great.
Two that nobody has mentioned that I highly recommend would be Steelhead Diner and Place Pigalle. Place Pigalle is cozy and hidden and it makes you feel like you're in on a secret when you're there. Plus, it has great views.
