I know info about neighborhoods is frequently sought, and I've looked through some of the responses. But I have particular circumstances. I'm looking to move to Seattle, working downtown. I have a bunch of kids in elementary school. I'd prefer to live in a decent, diverse neighborhood with a good school, park, shopping, and transit within a few blocks. Then I can walk the kiddies to school and hop on a bus to work. The cheaper the better, but safety counts. What should I look for?

Also, do the schools have afterschool or summer programs? Are there good parks & rec programs for kids? I've been checking out the public schools website, but it looks like afterschool and summer programs are kind of random.

Thanks!

You sound like a perfect candidate for Ballard. It's a great area with lots of neighborhood spirit and good safe areas for kids yet it's a short bus ride to downtown. It's cheaper to rent in than a lot of other "close in" areas. Good luck!

How nice would you like the schools? Ballard has a good elementary (70th st) and it has an ON site after scchool program

We go to Wedgwood (number 2 elementary in the district) and it has an on site after school program too - but it's by City of Seattle. My son love it and I must say it's amazing. They are quite interactive and the counselors are top notch.
