I spent a summer in Seattle back in the mid-eighties, which is when I tried Ivar's clam chowder for the first time. It was outstanding, and I believe it was flavored with bacon. After moving back to the Seattle area about a year ago, I was disappointed to discover that Ivar's clam chowder now tastes like overpriced Campbell's. My question to the forum, certainly to those who have been around Seattle since the 80's, is whether anyone else has noticed a decline in the quality of Ivar's clam chowder.

After 30 years, I'm sure they cut back on ingredients, to economize and keep up with inflation, increased minimum wage, etc. It happens to everyone. Do you remember how the price compared? Just curious.

I have had it recently and over the last 20 years or so. I don't remember it ever being anything special, just decent, and a nice compliment to fast food fish & chips. For really good chowder I prefer any of the Anthony's, Duke's, Elliot's, or
Arnie's in Edmonds.

The regular normal Ivar's chowder has never had bacon in it. Sometimes at the restaurants( not the fish bars) they will feature a chowder with bacon. On a cold, wet day, Ivar's tastes good. Yes, it's got potatoes and flour, and no heavy cream. It's also never been abundant with clams. I guess that's why they don't call it "Clams Chowder". Still, offer me some on a cold wet day and I'm all over it.

Could it be that your standards got higher? You've probably eaten a lot of good clam chowder since the 80s. What you thought was good then might taste a lot worse to you now, even if the recipe didn't change.

I think you can buy it at Costco these days. It's tasty because they add a lot of heavy cream. Not super healthy, but tasty, kinda like a Cinnabon.

By any chance did you live in New England between then and now?

I'd say about a buck less, but I'm not positive. I remember that it was a bit on the pricey side (like now), but I didn't mind paying more for the quality.

You're right on about Duke's (I haven't tried the others.). So Duke's has become my go-to spot when I want decent chowder.

Funny you should ask. Yes, I spent a full decade in New Hampshire. And despite New England's reputation for clam chowder, I had to hunt down the good stuff (as I've had to do here in Seattle with coffee). Still, I don't remember having any chowder in New England that compared to how I remembered Ivar's to be.
