There are dense neighborhoods (Capitol Hill, First Hill, Uptown, Queen Anne, Belltown) surrounding downtown, but there is not a huge amount of housing in downtown proper (more hotels, stores, office towers).

Once South Lake Union and the Denny Triangle area area all built up with the dozens of towers going up right now, Seattle's "downtown" will feel quite contiguous and large. Once you step out of the main "downtown" area, into Capitol Hill and First Hill, you are still in a very dense environment.

So short answer is: Seattle has a pretty large downtown as far as non-NYC/Chicago cities go. In 10 years, Seattle's urban core will be much more impressive.

It's something that's been changing over the last ten years or so. Twenty or thirty years ago, not very many people lived in downtown Seattle, and those that did were poor. People who had more money lived close to downtown, but not in downtown. Now, they've built a lot of highrise condos and apartments, and it's considered a good thing to live near where you work. But even 30 years ago, the number of people who lived downtown was very small. it was dense in the sense of a lot of people working there, but not living there.

I think this is very true. More development is coming for the SoDo area, too, so I think you'll see more hotels and office buildings spreading from downtown/Pioneer Square down south past the stadiums. I do know that some office/hotel towers are planned for that area and a residential re-zoning is coming. This city is going to be a top 10 market if it keeps growing the way that it has been.
