Well, that wasn't a good use of taxpayer money, was it? Wasn't it controversial at the time, because a bond issue had to be passed to fund it, or something? What a complete waste! Domed stadiums at the time were trendy, so Seattle sports fans just had to have one.

The engineers didn't account for the suction force caused by the Seahawks and the Mariners in their roof design.

Oh yeah.. No I didnt mean the kingdome :-) Though I do miss that too. Driving up to Seattle as a kid on I-5, youd always wait for the Rainier R and then the Kingdome. It was pretty ugly and cement though, so not at all Northwest Contemporary.

I totally get this type of architecture. It was meant to be modern, yet blend in with the natural northwest, using wood, atleast on the outer surfaces. I wish I had some photos to share, but you can see a lot of this in suburban apartment complexes, especially around Bothell, outer Redmond, outer Kirkland, Kent, Auburn. A lot of it still exists, (like I am speaking about it like it is ancient history lol.)

As for the Kingdome, I agree with all above. Why? Because we could. Was it right? Absolutely not, but hindsight is 20/20.

Don't dismiss Kingdome memories, however. Griffey Jr. in '95. Sonics NBA championship series in '79, though they won it on the road.

And most importantly, being able to bring my baseball loving late father to a suite in the early 80's. I think he was impressed.

My clients tend to love this kind of architecture when I show it to them, especially if the home has had upgrades. Often, these places are on larger lots with mature trees, a big bonus. They are spacious, often have an excellent open floor plan high ceiling. As others have mentioned, they are meant to blend with the natural environment, a noble goal architecturally.
