The areas in question are rapidly gentrifying, with people moving into them because more affordable housing can be found there. Gangs are being pushed south, but are still trying to hold onto "turf" there.

Yes it’s the (Alaska) Junction. We had a house there on the western slope and I consider it pretty safe. We’ve never had a break-in living there, even though we were absent a lot. The area is safe to walk around even at night. You’re within walking distance to QFC, Safeway, LA Fitness, and Whole Foods (I heard it’s going back after all?). If your office is in downtown the bus stop on Alaska and California takes you directly to 2nd and Seneca and to 3rd and Pike in 30-50min during typical commute hours.
