Boeing Co. is shrinking its Seattle-area workforce by at least 1,800 jobs this year as the company streamlines operations in a brutally competitive commercial-aircraft market.

The planemaker approved voluntary layoffs for 1,500 mechanics, according to a person familiar with the situation who asked not to be named because it hasn’t been made public. Another 305 engineers and technical workers are leaving voluntarily, Bill Dugovich, a spokesman for their union, said Thursday.

Retail jobs are just these stores vs. some other stores. There's no adding.

Boeing is worrisome if it becomes a longer trend. Those are net additive/deductive jobs for the region, plus a decent multiplier.

The handwriting has been on the wall since the Boeing Aircraft company moved its headquarters to Chicago years ago.

The Seattle area needs to diversify its economy more and more so the next time Boeing says 'Give us this or we'll leave" our response can be "We would like you to stay, but sorry, can't do that".

Easier said than done, I know.

With 80,000 workers in this area, 1,800 layoffs isn't going to make much of a difference to the local economy, which is now far more diversified now than when they had the massive layoffs in the past.
Meanwhile, Amazon is expecting to hire 100,000 more employees in the U.S. in the next few years,
with about 10,000 in this region.

Yes, except the total number is much larger, as has been reported, Boeing let go some 7,000 workers in 2016 and plans more this year. The 1,800 is on top of the 2016 number and most indications are there will be more. Lets assume there isn't much more and the total peaks around 10k or so, that is still 12% of the Seattle workforce for Boeing.

Of course ups and downs are expected and no one expected airplane orders to remain at 2014 levels forever just as we can't expect car sales to remain elevated.

Boeing has always had a lot of layoffs and rehires. I used to know a family-both worked for Boeing. They got laid off and rehired a few or so times. This would be nerve wracking.
