I don't think this is news. The West Coast and CO have the least obesity on the national maps. People are the most physically active in those regions. I wonder if that has to do in part with the great weather in the western parts of the coastal states, which is more amenable to outdoor activities in the summer. The NE also ranks well in that regard.

Contrary to popular opinion on this forum, I guess there ARE some people who get out to exercise despite the rain and clouds.

Seattle has a huge fitness culture, rain or shine. This isn't just outside, health clubs are packed too. Combine this with good healthy food availability and high education levels, this study isn't surprising.

Yep, homes. I've noticed a correlation between morbid obesity and income. I feel a bit mean saying that, and I know there are many exceptions, but watching various shows about weight loss journeys, I see it.

I also see many more husky kids and teens than when I was in school. I remember eating lots of candy as a kid and still got teased for being a "stick" so I'm a bit confused about the possible differences between then and now.

I hope that the culture changes to the extent that real changes are made.

wazey, I think it is more education than income, I have some poor hippie and artist friends who are in pretty good shape. I get your point though.

Yah. Call me Claire, if you like.

I think that the human condition is quite varied, that's for sure!

Not sure if that is true....what is true.

At work, I had to look at data for a similar survey for the Seattle area. Seattle is least fat, active, etc. etc. because the region has LOTS of educated (who tend to be fit), young ( who tend to be skinny) and opportunity for physical activity given all the public lands in the region.

IF you looked at data by age group I suspect you would find Seattle area, still being somewhat more fit than the rest of the country...but the gap would decline when your just comparing averages.
