Coalition wants to Trump-proof Seattle with income tax

What do you all think the chances of this happening are? Would this apply to only Seattle proper or all of King County?

Seems they're trying to create a state income tax at the state level as well :/
7% capital gains tax proposed

This is one of the negatives of democracy. Every single citizen gets a vote regardless of their temperament, education, intelligence, and understanding of the situation.

Yes, let's tax Seattle's tech elite until it no longer makes financial sense to be in Seattle rather than SV. Then, when they're all gone, we'll have no rich people to tax and have to shift it to the poor to make them poorer.

It will 100% fail in court. Income tax is under State purview. These people are just wasting taxpayer dollars.

Please post some quotes from the article, for us who've already used up our scanty allowance of Seattle Times articles.

The City of Olympia has already proposed an income tax on high incomes, to fund colleges. It failed, but if it had passed, a long court battle would have ensued. The proponents said it was not an income tax, but an excise tax on the gross income of a household. This was their argument to get around the state laws. There is also an effort to impose a capital gains tax statewide to fund public schools, and would apply to capital gains above $25,000 for single filers and $50,000 for joint filers.

The Transit Riders Union tried to hit me up at Capitol Hill Station with big signs "Tax the Rich". First, what does it have to do with transit? Their hearts are in the right place, but... no. They also might be surprised to find out that politicians might not be as enthusiastic as they think-- our representative Kshama isn't a peasant - she has a house in Leschi (which is not exactly a socialist hotbed).

What's with all the bums in Seattle trying to get a free ride instead of working hard, getting an education, and then climbing their way up the ladder like normal responsible citizens? It's probably one of my biggest gripes against the city.

I will go along easily with a State Income Tax for Washington...as long as they ditch the Sales Tax at the same time.

A Sales Tax is inherently UNFAIR. It hurts the poor and those on fixed incomes much more than the rich. To the rich, it's a 'whatever'.

A State Income Tax, if done intelligently, is much more fair and could raise even more revenue.

Remember...even the homeless have to buy stuff sometimes.

I don't think an income tax would ever pass and I don't want to have to bother filing a state income tax return. People need to pay their fees, sales tax and whatever so the state has the funds it needs without creating an income tax. Go ahead and Trump proof Seattle but let's do it without an income tax.

What a short sighted notion. Rather than tax people, how about elect people to fight the charlatan and his ridiculous policies. The city doesn't need protection if the WH has no power.

A hope the coalition has lawyers willing to work for free, 'cause they're going to be busy little beavers. For years.
