Blue collar, uneducated whites - the cornerstone of today's GOP - benefit the most from government assistance programs. The majority of educated and affluent whites now swing Democrat, as the Republican party has well and truly abandoned any principled, well, anything, aside from an abiding, unifying, monstrous hatred of "liberals".

Pointing out that red states take more federal dollars because they have lower local tax burdens rather proves the point that they mooch off of other states. Like the reports of WalMart directing workers to the welfare office vs paying an adequate living wage, it's integral to their financial strategy.

Absolutely positively agree. Look at the top ten states on Disability. They are all in the south with West Virginia topping the list at almost 10% of the population. We pay for that because they certainly aren't. I'm not optimistic that the "United" States will be all that united in the years to come. I think we are approaching a kind of regionalism where blue states work together the way Washington, California and Oregon do. It's the only way we can move forward with Republicans trying to economically penalize blue states. Simply work with other blue states to the exclusion of red states. As terrible is this tax plan is, I'm curious how Republicans will do in blue states in the next election considering what they voted to do to their constituents.

That data looks to be over 20 years old. The highest percentage of people on Disability is in West Virginia and their population is overwhelmingly white.*

*And I'm "Seattle white" which is practically blue but we get fewer wrinkles.

Here is more recent data which shows that whites are 62% of the population and receive 17% of welfare payments while blacks (who are 13% of the population) receive 40% of all welfare payments....Asians, blacks, and Hispanics all receive a total welfare payment in excess of what whites receive despite the fact that whites dwarf the number of the other 3 groups. On a per capita basis, blacks receive approximately 10 times the welfare assistance as whites.

How about quoting and contrasting the % of African American and White people who live below the poverty line by the % of benefits received by each group. In other words, I am guessing this is a “poverty” issue rather than a “race” issue and poor whites and African Americans receive benefits at the same marginal rate. And if you turn around and argue wait, African Americans are impoverished at a greater rate than whites due to a difference in work ethic or culture, then you’re a disgusting racist. Period.
