What is the "average pay" that an elderly person on disability gets in Seattle? What is the minimum? I understand that it is based on several factors, particularly work history, but is there an average and a minimum? My grandfather worked his entire life pretty much at various "under the table" jobs and has been diagnosed as permanently disabled for over a decade (and has recently sustained even more injuries, with dementia) but has never filed for disability. If he filed now, approximately how much would he get? What would it be based off of? Part of why I ask is because the other day, on the local news, a drug addict on the street was featured and it was said that he receives $4,300 a month in disability. What on earth?! Thank you.

“If you are eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI, or sometimes just SSD) benefits, the amount you receive each month will be based on your average lifetime earnings before your disability began. It is not based on how severe your disability is or how much income you have. Most SSDI recipients receive between $800 and $1,800 per month (the average for 2019 is $1,234). However, if you are receiving disability payments from other sources, as discussed below, your payment may be reduced.

The amount of money you will receive from Social Security on a monthly basis is unique for every individual. This is due to the fact that the Social Security Administration (SSA) uses a complex weighted formula in order to calculate benefits for each person, up to the maximum benefit of $2,861 in 2019.

To see your entire covered earnings history, you can check your annual Social Security Statement. You can check your statement online at www.ssa.gov/mystatement/. If you want to enter salary information yourself rather than rely on your earnings record and Social Security's estimate of your future earnings, you can use the SSA's online benefits calculator at http://www.socialsecurity.gov/planne...alculators.htm.) You can also call your local Social Security office and a field representative will be able to help you estimate what your benefits would be.”

Hope that helps, I’ve found them very useful!

If he worked under the table and didn't pay any SS taxes, he may qualify for SSI, depending on his living situation and disabilities (dr records needed or SSA sends him to a Dr decides in 30 minutes or so if he is disabled and what disabilities), etc. If he is already retirement age (depending on when he was born) then he would not qualify for disability, only Social Security.

Without knowing more facts, you can guess that he might get around $750 if he lives alone and pays rent on his own, and does not have excessive assets.
