Car free lifestyle? advise plz

I commuted to work by bus during a few of the big Seattle snows too and wore snow boots those days and packed shoes in my backpack to change into at work. They don't clear sidewalks out here, and the snow made it a mess for walking. The busses on snow routes often meant walking a long way to another stop. And standing room only on busses as people abandoned their cars and took the bus home.
