Hello,

Did a google search and couldn't find any concrete answers. It seems to vary by state and jurisdiction.

I need to transport a table that is approx 8 feet in length. With my rear seats down flat, there would be approx 2 feet sticking out of the trunk. The entire drive will be on local streets and the distance is less than 5 miles.

If it is legal to drive with hatch open, are there any precautions that I need to take?

Thanks.

I would put a flag on the part sticking out and make sure the table is secured so it can't slide out.

The law requires that loads be covered, and that if it protrudes by 3' or more it has a red flag. In your case with a table, I suppose a picky, mean officer could cite you if you don't cover it, but that's meant to keep small items from flying out. Just make sure it's tied down well, and you should be fine. I see a lot more being carried, including 8' long boards going in one window and out another going down the road.

I would keep your window open, though, because your exhaust fumes can be sucked up through the open trunk.

I’d see if I could bring the hatch down and tie it down, even if it isn’t fully closed. Probably a much better ride that way.

Lamps, reflectors, and flags on projecting load.

The implication being yes it is legal, with conditions.

Agree tie the load down. Put a Flag on it, Drive slower to keep from your load falling out.
