My husband and I are relocating to the Seattle area in late 2008. He is an officer in the Air Force, stationed at McChord and I am in the wireless telecommunications industry, so will most likely be working in the Bellevue/Seattle area. Is it possible for for us to live half-way between and not have ridiculous commuting times? If so, are there any suggestions for great neighborhoods? We prefer older neighborhoods with 1920s craftsman style homes w/ shoppes, restaurants, etc -- but I am getting the feeling that the greater Seattle area mostly consists of planned suburbs with cookie-cutter homes. Are there any historical neighborhoods in between McChord and Bellevue? We will only be in the area for around 2 years, so are planning to rent. We can afford ~2,000/month in rent.

The Bellevue area is newer and doesn't have 20's craftsmans, but Seattle and Tacoma do. In Seattle, they're in many neighborhoods, including Queen Anne, Ballard, Wallingford, Fremont, Phinney, Columbia City, Mount Baker, the Central District., and others.
In Tacoma, the Proctor District is full of gorgeous 20's homes and is a fun, vibrant, walkable neighborhood.

Thanks, Ira500!

I've heard Tacoma has some beautiful historical neighborhoods, but is it feasible to commute from Tacoma all the way up to Seattle or Bellevue? I'd be willing to commute 30-45 minutes, but I think anything more than that would start to impact quality of life.

Sound Transit's Sounder Train goes from Tacoma to Seattle rather painlessly...
McChord AFB is pretty close to Tacoma...I think best case scenario, a trip from Tacoma to Bellevue would be 45 minutes...If school districts aren't a concern, you might want to consider Renton or Kent. These are both cities with history, meaning they have old downtowns with a little charm, and some nice older houses.
