It did look that that one. I have no problem with pigeons, even though most people refer to them as flying rats. I've got more problem with stellar jays, who raid other bird's nests.

There is a bird that fiercely defends its nest. I believe its called a starling? I was at a rest stop outside of Chehalis and got chased all the way from the restroom to my car by a mean little bird the size of a sparrow. Gotta admire the moxie of a little bird like that!

This link that MichaelinWA provided is wonderful:
Welcome to Herons Forever — Herons Forever

Within that link, this section Mike and Betta (http://home1.gte.net/mikeham/ - broken link) (not MichaelinWA he tells me) has dozens of photos of local birds. Maybe you'll recognize some?

Unfortunately, this site hasn't been working properly this weekend, possibly because of hacker attacks mentioned on this page:

BirdWeb - Seattle Audubon's Guide to the Birds of Washington

But when it does work, the Browse Birds tool is a really cool resource to identify birds. You'll get clear pictures, maps, and you can even play a sound for each bird.

Looks like the site is working again.

BirdWeb - Learn About the Birds of Washington State

I have determined that possibly the most common visitor to our backyard might be the "American Robin."

We get a ton of those too. I grew up with those in PA and missed them living in the south. Now I see robins again! :-)

We put up a small bird feeder in our backyard last weekend, and we saw a new visitor on Wednesday and Thursday - Washington's state bird, the American Goldfinch. Very pretty and colorful. Seems to enjoy our seeds from Petsmart.

I love goldfinches! I haven't gotten any at our feeders because we're in the woods. I've seen them in more open areas. We have a lot of pine siskins.

We haven't seen any goldfinches lately. But we've identified a new frequent visitor to our backyard, the Oregon Junco.

See the bird bios:

Urban Birds of Puget Sound

When not eating seeds in the feeder, they like to sit on the fence scolding us and our cat with clicking sounds, just like the site says.
