I live in North Snohomish county west of Arlington. In the Winter time I would die without my wood stove. Once it gets below 30 degrees the electric heat just won't cut it. When we have snow and bad wind storms in the winter the power also goes out frequently. I have a cook top on my wood stove which has saved me many nights from going hungry when the power was out. On the other hand, I only use my wood stove an average of 10-20 days a year.
For heat reasons, a gas fireplace sends most of the heat up the the flue. However, there are inserts available that direct the heat into the room.
When burn bans are on, you are not supposed to use a wood stove unless it is your only source of heat. In the 18 years I have lived here, I have never been challenged, even though there is a fire station in my neighborhood 2 miles away.
If you want romance, enjoy your gas fireplace. If you want heat, get an insert. Just search the web for gas fireplace inserts.

I want to add a wood stove as a second heat source over in Kitsap Cty. I checked Home Depot and none of it's stoves could be shipped to WA,Ca etc., even the EPA ones!
My question: what exactly are the codes and where can I find them.
Thanks in advance.
