Hello there,

I'm thinking about moving to the Seattle area (either right in Seattle or somewhere near it) in about a year (next summer). I was just wondering, if any of you knew, what math teacher prospects might look like there in your wonderful city (and I can say that sincerely because I've been there). My wife wants to study Art Therapy there at Antioch University, and since I'm a math teacher, we would just like to know what the odds might be of me getting a job there. Any input would be great, thanks!

I just talked to a teacher last week. She made my latte.

See, it's situations like that that really **** me off about teachers going on strike. There are plenty of unemployed teachers out there, and, in this economy, teachers are striking. Ridiculous.

Why are they striking? I would be happy just to have a job. Is there any kind of job availability for teachers up there, then?

They're striking because the class sizes are really large now and they haven't come to a contract agreement yet. A lot of school districts laid off teachers this summer, causing a lot of stress for existing teachers. The laid off ones have either gotten other jobs elsewhere or set up espresso stands.

There's still demand for special ed teachers and preschool teachers.

You are so lucky to be going to Seattle.
I wish I knew someone there, I'd move in a heartbeat.
Good luck to you, and please keep us posted.

A Math teacher might have an easier time finding employment versus a teacher specializing in English, Social Studies, History, PE, etc.

My understanding is that math (higher math such as advanced algebra, trig, calculus) and physics teachers are still in demand in most school districts.
