From a distance, LA and Seattle look very different due to climate and vegetation, however, both cities contain neighborhoods built early in the 20th Century, so they both contain gridded blocks of craftsman bungalows, Victorians, Cape Cods, etc. A realtor familiar with Seattle's city neighborhoods might be a really valuable source of info for street shot locations.

I think the biggest challenge in getting a Seattle shot to pass for LA is, oddly enough, the street signs and the concrete used in the streets, which seems darker to me in Seattle for some reason, and maybe a little narrower, too. It could be that Seattle's oldest neighborhoods tend to have generous tree cover, so they can be dark even during summer.

Good post. So true. If you can get the right lighting, many locations in Seattle can double for LA. Heck, you can even find palms around Seattle!

Would those palms be growing nearby 200 foot western hemlocks in the backround?

Thanks so much for all the advice and comments so far! I appreciate it.

Also, Eskercurve, I just meant that for our film, it's cheaper to shoot locally in and around LA than it would be to move the entire production to Seattle (we'd have to pay for travel, lodging, etc). As I mentioned, we'll definitely still get establishing shots, but for the longer scenes, maybe we can still find a way to make it happen in LA so we don't have to spend more.

Thanks again!
