I know Seattle is expensive, but on the south seattle community college housing page, it says an average one-bedroom apartment rents for about $550 in Burien, $700 in West Seattle and $570 in White Center. Can you really get apartments that cheap, or are those some really crappy neighborhoods, because I thought a semi decent apartment would be atleast 800...
http://www.southseattle.edu/resources/housing.htm

and city data says Median gross rent in 2008: $940.
Dec. 2009 cost of living index in Seattle: 126.5 (high, U.S. average is 100)

I also don't know a ton about Seattle and the cost of living, but I do know it is expensive, not like Los Angeles but still expensive

Well, apartments that low you can expect it to be old and not luxurious.

Burien and White Center is revitalizing itself as well, so that's factoring in too (though both are great neighborhoods and close to DT).

I'd say that there are good parts and bad parts of both White Center and Burien. Downtown Burien has become a lot nicer, and White Center is an interesting and very diverse neighborhood. But it is also more economically diverse than a lot of Seattle and Eastside neighborhoods, meaning there are visibly poor folks. Neither place is especially dangerous.
