That is how it works

Last week we had a 4-day stretch without clear skies, our home battery-bank was running kind of low.

WOW. I had no idea you guys had so little daylight in winter, but it makes sense.

In Maine I guess I have about 9 to 9-1/2 hours of daylight right now. About 10 days to go before that starts to reverse, but even so, it will take a few months to improve noticeably.

What we do during this time of year, is run the generator a few hours maybe twice a week, just to charge up the batteries. Sure beats running the genny 24/7. That's why a large capacity battery bank is so important!

Right now or official sunrise time is 10:25am with a sunset of 2:48 PM for 4 hours and 22 mins. Unfortunately, there's a giant mountain range behind my house so I may get half of that as the sun is very low on the horizon. There is twilight on each end of those times though. Our shortest day on the 22nd will be 4hrs 6 mins of day light here. I'm at 64 degrees North. It also hasn't been above zero degrees here for weeks. We hit -40 below a couple weeks ago. Loads of fun! This winter so far has been much colder than my previous two up here.

I do need to upgrade my battery bank. I have two deep cycle batteries that I charge up with my little honda, my 2 100w solar panels charge them some but not nearly enough this time of year. I would like to upgrade my system to 6 batteries here in the near future.

I thought global warming was going to be great news for me the last two warm winters. It seems to have disappeared this winter with no signs of coming back anytime soon .
