According to an internet primer published by the Federation of American Scientists
A high-altitude nuclear detonation produces an immediate flux of gamma rays from the nuclear reactions within the device. These photons in turn produce high energy free electrons by Compton scattering at altitudes between (roughly) 20 and 40 km. These electrons are then trapped in the Earth's magnetic field, giving rise to an oscillating electric current. This current is asymmetric in general and gives rise to a rapidly rising radiated electromagnetic field called an electromagnetic pulse (EMP).
Because the electrons are trapped essentially simultaneously, a very large electromagnetic source radiates coherently. The pulse can easily span continent-sized areas, and this radiation can affect systems on land, sea, and air. ... A large device detonated at 400–500 km (250 to 312 miles) over Kansas would affect all of the continental U.S. The signal from such an event extends to the visual horizon as seen from the burst point.

I 100%agree that the rise is aggressive socialism in america, in our media and academia is setting up our country to want socialism it's terrifying and its part of a deliberate agenda of globalisation.

You are wrong we as citizens can do things to prevent EMPs. We can demand our politicians spend the necessary money to harden the electrical grid. Write and call your representatives. Learn what the FERC commission is about. Join a group like empactamerica
.org. Put electronics in a faraday cage, have food on hand etc.. There's plenty a regular citizen can do. We can't control of some whacko or country wants to destroy but we can try to stop it and be prepared. In not just going to sit back and do nothing.
I've reached out to my elected leaders and told them to take action. If they waste billions of dollars in crap they can surely spend it on something to potentially save america. One way or another (hackers, emp, cme, physical damage, human error) the grid will go down for an extended time. Its just a matter of when.

Im still trying to figure why anybody still thinks NK is a threat when the fatard cant even get a decent launch without blowing up his own pads. He is all bluff, nothing more nothing less. It's not just what North Korea might do, but what China might. Eventually, North Korea will develop nuclear weapons advanced enough to reach the U.S. However, they don't even need to launch them to cause massive problems--they just need to get close to having them.
If the U.S. determines NK to be a threat, we will attempt a preemptive non-nuclear strike. What do you think China will think of U.S. military action on the other side of its border? This may lead to a very significant cold war between China in the U.S. or perhaps even military skirmishes. Russia will be sure to capitalize in some way as well.
However, as others have stated I think there is a rising possibility of social disruption in our own country due to recent political divisions. It seems that people of every political persuasion have lost their minds and are their own little Facebook propaganda machines.
Just heard something interesting on the radio. Commentator said that North Korea's nukes might be designed to explode above a country to create an EMP incident.
All nuclear weapons are capable of producing an EMP field.

The electromagnetic field that is generated can saturate the affected are up to several hours depending on the size of the nuclear warhead used. It effectively "shorts out" anything electronic by over-loading and damaging micro-chips, resistors and other electronic component parts.
