According to an internet primer published by the Federation of American Scientists
A high-altitude nuclear detonation produces an immediate flux of gamma rays from the nuclear reactions within the device. These photons in turn produce high energy free electrons by Compton scattering at altitudes between (roughly) 20 and 40 km. These electrons are then trapped in the Earth's magnetic field, giving rise to an oscillating electric current. This current is asymmetric in general and gives rise to a rapidly rising radiated electromagnetic field called an electromagnetic pulse (EMP).

Because the electrons are trapped essentially simultaneously, a very large electromagnetic source radiates coherently
. The pulse can easily span continent-sized areas, and this radiation can affect systems on land, sea, and air. ... A large device detonated at 400–500 km (250 to 312 miles) over Kansas would affect all of the continental U.S. The signal from such an event extends to the visual horizon as seen from the burst point.

Thank you for coherently explaining the point I was trying to make

World War 3 Nightmare Scenario Brewing

Here is an article why you should worry about NK. You can doubt it or argue it that's fine and your right to do so. But please take it seriously.

Um, you've posted like 8x in this thread, no less in this the "Self-Sufficiency and Preparedness" forum.
Do you know what this means? - it is intended to serve as Educational...
but
None of your posts did that. "Take it seriously" ?? what in hell... None of us US-citizens can STOP them.
iow
you are NOT, in the least "Self-sufficiency...educating..." anyone.
The ONLY thing
you're trying to do is Scaring people to death. Knock it off already!!

This entire thread does NOT belong in this forum. Do others here agree ?

This is a preparedness sub forum!! People into preparing are interested in different scenarios to consider and be aware of. An EMP poses specific risks that people may not be aware of.

ok, so we are AWARE... of tons of crap that frankly None of us common citizens can stop.
Sure,
we can Stock-pile... a bazillion Helpful items, & Hopefully these will get us through a crisis, or 3. However,
some of us also realize that by making people freak-out ,
over scenarios they have NO control, that is counter-productive!! <-- You are only doing that.
And
mind you, the biggest threats to our "Domestic security" is NOT what's going on elsewhere in world, but
the Liberal, Nazi, Socialists changing... America, the USA-part.
How do I know? - raised under communism And while that beginning actually proved a blessing in more ways than one, - at the same time I have spent 1/2 century trying to enlighten... anyone willing to listen & pay attention, to how in the past 100 years, more & More & MORE of our God-granted freedoms have been eroded. - And Hitliary would have killed us mercilessly completely. But thank God, enough in this nation w/ still 1/2 a clue, we PRAYED earnestly... & God listens to every desperate soul so we were spared, this time.
iow
(drinkthekoolaid): IF you want to help people (even here in this Forum), Please make people AWARE of the everpresent dangers withIN our country. Warn your family, Warn your neighbors, DRINK LIFE, not death.
Got it?

I 100%agree that the rise is aggressive socialism in america, in our media and academia is setting up our country to want socialism it's terrifying and its part of a deliberate agenda of globalisation.

If what I post scares you, I'm sorry but thats too bad. Just because You are frightened doesn't mean that what I'm saying is wrong. Maybe you have a reason to be frightened because You know it to be a possibility and haven't done anything to protect yourself or family. Its never to late to start.
You are wrong we as citizens can do things to prevent EMPs. We can demand our politicians spend the necessary money to harden the electrical grid. Write and call your representatives. Learn what the FERC commission is about. Join a group like empactamerica
.org. Put electronics in a faraday cage, have food on hand etc.. There's plenty a regular citizen can do. We can't control of some whacko or country wants to destroy but we can try to stop it and be prepared. In not just going to sit back and do nothing.

I've reached out to my elected leaders and told them to take action. If they waste billions of dollars in crap they can surely spend it on something to potentially save america. One way or another (hackers, emp, cme, physical damage, human error) the grid will go down for an extended time. Its just a matter of when.

The guy is a left leaning journalist but read red koppels back "Lights out" even he a progressive lefty was terrified when he started interviewing high ranking government and private officials.

And I also agree , pray. Pray for God to give you wisdom and guidance, and for protection.

And this is why we have guns, gold and generators. And why we hang onto the old truck.

It's not just what North Korea might do, but what China might. Eventually, North Korea will develop nuclear weapons advanced enough to reach the U.S. However, they don't even need to launch them to cause massive problems--they just need to get close to having them.

If the U.S. determines NK to be a threat, we will attempt a preemptive non-nuclear strike. What do you think China will think of U.S. military action on the other side of its border? This may lead to a very significant cold war between China in the U.S. or perhaps even military skirmishes. Russia will be sure to capitalize in some way as well.

However, as others have stated I think there is a rising possibility of social disruption in our own country due to recent political divisions. It seems that people of every political persuasion have lost their minds and are their own little Facebook propaganda machines.

All nuclear weapons are capable of producing an EMP field.

The last four weapons tested by North Korea were 2 kt, 20 kt, 20 kt and 30 kt respectively.

Your commentator isn't very knowledgeable.

The electromagnetic field that is generated can saturate the affected are up to several hours depending on the size of the nuclear warhead used. It effectively "shorts out" anything electronic by over-loading and damaging micro-chips, resistors and other electronic component parts.

I'd say the US was destroyed.

Then you'll need to stock-pile at at least 1 year's worth of food (& medicine).

The great lot of you seem to take for granted and are unaware how much your life is dependent upon electricity and electronic devices, especially micro-chipped devices.

An EMP attack in the Fall would be devastating.

Once food is looted from the grocery stores, that's it. It's pee-pee pants city. No more food; freezing cold for those who live in the northern climes; simple injuries can lead to death by infection, since there's no doctors or medicine available; urban areas will suffer from a lack of water with people dying of dehydration; and then there's the constant threat of violence from those who would try to take what you have, even if you have nothing at all.

No countries will be able to help Americans.

It will take decades to rebuild the electrical grid and replace all of the electric-transformers on telephone poles that failed. And there would be scant labor, since the surviving 10 Million to 17 Million Americans would be scattered all over and everyone would be involved in farming to feed themselves throughout the next Winter.
