I wasn't sure where to post this, but I am blown away this fall by the exorbitant price of apples. I have yet to see any bulk apples prices less than $1.99/lb, which means you will pay close to $2.00 for one large apple. Most apples so far this season are $1.99 - $3.49/lb and it's apple season! This is true across the board (Kroger's, Hiller's, Whole Foods, Busch's, Meijer's, etc). Trader Joe's charges $.89 - $.99/ apple, and they are not big.

The bags of tiny apples (2" diameter) are less expensive, but by the time you remove the core and possibly peel them, there is very little flesh left. And they are very small to start with. I was at my local supermarket the other day at the self checkout, and one gingergold apple came in at $1.45. One apple! I said no thanks and had that item removed from my grocery order.

What happened to "medium" sized apples at a reasonable price? Either the apples are 2" miniatures in plastic bags, or they are huge and flawless, and very expensive. The orchards around here (in Michigan, which is a apple producing state) charge a lot for U-pick. What's going on with the apples this fall? The crop was very good this year as far as I know.

I don't know, but suddenly I'm hungry for an apple, so I'm gonna go get one!

It's still early in the season. I've been paying $1.99/lb too, but it's a wash in my eyes as I'm not loading up the cart with tons of summer produce anymore. I expect prices will drop within the next couple of weeks.

I did try a couple of Kiku apples that our local store had in a special display. They were advertised as the world's sweetest apples. That may be, and they were pretty good, but I like a bit of tartness, so I won't be buying more.
