Sure. If I am not having a lot of items ready put out to scan and I am in a hurry.
But why this question? Is there some "etiquette" about that? You do what you need to do. No one cares...
Funny you mention that. I was in line at Dollar Tree and the lady in front of me was having problems with her debit card going through. The second time she asked the cashier to take an item off, I turned to the person behind me and told them they should go to the next line over since there was only one person that was just finishing up. The cashier got snotty with me and basically told me I needed to be patient. The lady I told to go to the other line asked if I wanted to go since I was in front of her. I said "oh no - I just got admonished for trying to jump lanes"!
Seriously - why would she care if I took my measly 3 items over to the next cashier. You'd think she'd appreciate not holding up the line any longer but she acted like I was doing something wrong. I love shopping at Dollar Tree but I hate that particular store. Too bad since it's only 1/2 mile from my house.
I usually head for the self check out lane, if I have a lot of groceries I'll be patient for a while then I will ask the manager to get more cashiers. They can always get more help especially if your cart is over flowing with money, oops I mean groceries. well, they get the idea.
Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Either way, its no big deal. Waiting won't kill me. If it becomes apparent that its going to be a long time fixing, I'll switch. No harm, no foul. We all hit snags and snarls sometimes, no reason to sweat it.
There are some who would stand and patiently (or otherwise) wait till whatever issue was resolved. They may WANT to bolt, but they won't.
Why? They have some idea in their head that to leave the line will make either the cashier or the customer feel bad or even mad at them.
I have no such issues.
Maybe they are just too tired to care to relocate. I know I have BTDT. Sometimes, just standing still is resting. For me, it all depends on the situation.
If there are any available, I grab a PEOPLE magazine & read up on all the scandals.
Hey!! I like that idea! I used to read readers digest when in line...a section that had laughter is the best medicine. Many a chuckle was heard as I stood there.

Nah, it's nothing like that. It's just trying to determine which line will move faster. And whether I've already unloaded my cart and have everything on the belt.
