(CNSNews.com) – The American Family Association (AFA) has issued its annual “naughty and nice” list of retailers that ban, avoid -- or in some cases, use -- the word Christmas to describe merchandise in stores and in advertising.

Sure is a good thing that we have NO other more important issues facing America's families that the AFA could get involved in...

Interesting. Especially since I was in Costco last weekend and saw plenty of Christmas stuff with the actual word itself. Bought some of it as well. I see CVS is on that list too and same thing. Plenty of Christmas stuff and I have the crapola to prove it. I swear I think these people make stuff up just so they have something to complain about. And I say this as a Catholic who would raise holy hell if I thought there was such a strong anti-Christmas sentiment out there.

Can someone please explain why this matters at all?

I worked at Target for 5+ years and people would tell me, when I am not at work, that they refuse to shop at Target because the employees are not allowed to say Merry Christmas and the product all said holiday instead of Christmas. First, Target has never dictated to anyone they can't say Merry Christmas. Second, what difference does it make what the labels on the trees say? Most employees still call them Christmas trees anyway. I don't understand why people get so worked up about this stuff.

Excellent posts, ALL! I truly believe this whole issue is the efforts of a few fundamentalists (with a little help from the media looking for a quick buck...) trying to stir stuff up. I truly believe that few people really care what the sales clerk says when they check out or what the advertising says... I don't care which greeting I hear.

I use those AFA naughty lists as a "must patronize" guide.

What started this was corporations going PC and going out of their way to avoid using the word "Christmas" in their sales advertisements and in the label of some Christmas related products. They do this so as not to offend people who may be offended by a Christian based holiday. They'll still carry the products and put holiday colors on their advertisements but what holiday decorations they do print on the flier are secular to avoid offending anyone. It's the Christmas holiday that helps many businesses break even which is why the day after Thanksgiving is called "Black Friday" because it generates so many sales it puts the company in the black.

When I was much younger I'd go shopping with my mom, and the checkout lady would say "Merry Christmas. It wasn't Christmas day, or even Christmas Eve, so it always jarred me to hear it, knowing that the big day was still over 2 weeks away. To this day, I still forget to wish people a merry Christmas until the week before, and I still don't really care to hear it before then.
