The used clothing business has been around for over 100 years and you are quite correct about it being a closed industry. I have been a broker of bulk used consumer goods for five years now and I am still learning something new every day - one of the reasons I love what I do. Part of my big dream for the future of my business is to create a more open, transparent understanding of the industry and set some standards to describe the different commodities. For instance: Used "Grade A" for Africa is not at all the same quality as Used "Grade A" for domestic resale. Descriptions are subjective according to the market they are being sold in or exported to. Institutional Mixed Clothing is from charity shops like Goodwill, Salvation Army, and smaller non-profit organizations. They do indeed get donations for their stores but what can be misleading is the end bulk product - this can be so picked over by the time it is baled it is likely to be 75% or higher straight textile recycling and not for reuse. Keep asking questions though - there are some of us who like to help people and not just make a quick buck.

Goodwill has weekly auctions of bulk clothing. Some lots are boxes of high end clothing and some are simply bales of mixed type of clothes.
