Not sure about football, don't really watch it. As for basketball, I'm a Laker fan so I'm biased. When it comes to matching, there are a lot of factors involved (history/money/trophies/players). And I simply don't know enough about some American teams to compare. Hence why I'm asking people that would know.
lol this will fail...bunch of brits/euros in here save myself..and even i dont really watch much bball or any american football
Liverpool = Celtics (lots of history, not so much recently)
United = Lakers (also lots of history, known worldwide, always contenders for titles, always hated)
Chelsea/City = Dallas Mavericks (nouveau riche thanks to rich crazy owners that got them titles)

The Celtics won a title in 2008 and have been a winning team and have made the playoffs each of the last 5 seasons and made the second round each of the last 5 seasons as well.
I would agree on the Mavericks/Chelsea comparison. Good choice on Dallas.
Here is what someone did for English teams to MLB teams.
