Why do soccer players have such terrible running form/technique?

For a sport with so much running, you think, they learn how to maximize their stride, how to use their arms, and to position their bodies. But if you watch them, they are terrible. I think they need to bring in some track coaches.

NFL has a lot of former track athletes, or dual sport track/football athletes. I guess track and field are not that big in Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa.

Maybe because they are too busy setting up themselves for their flopping

Maybe running on grass with studded boots, often with a ball at their feet, or preparing to receive it with their head turned to face it? It's a completely different sport to track with much more skill and more variables involved. Simple really.

I wonder how Usain Bolt would have looked doing the 100 metres while dribbling a football.

Track & field is a totally different style of running from football/soccer, and no changes are needed. The athletes are already doing what needs to be done in order to perform correctly in their particular sport.

There is only one ball per 11 players on the pitch. Most of the players are running without a ball at their feet.

Since there is only one ball only one player can receive it, so most the other players trying to overload the defense, or trying to get back on defense will not be receiving it all the time.

Probably slower, but if he was chasing down a ball before it goes out of bounds, he can certainly use his full acceleration and galloping technique. Or if he is a wing back, and defending, and needs to chase down a ball carrier, then he wont have the ball at his feet.

Oh my god, it's not rocket science mate. Is it really so difficult to understand that people playing a team game, where they need to concentrate on what's going on around them, and not looking straight ahead at full pelt, requires a different set of skills? Being able to sprint like Usain Bolt is not required. You're also ignoring the surface they're playing on and the footwear they're wearing.

The game of soccer has many more facets than just track and field. Yet beating someone in a foot race is definitely one of them. The more you beat them, the more time, and space you give yourself and your team.

American Football also requires situational awareness, yet their running technique is practically perfect, sprinter like.

Top Flight, and development soccer will stand to gain much if they take elements from different sports to improve themselves.

I think it's done alright for 180 years or so.

I doubt American Football players have the same technique as sprinters given all the armour they wear. I think I see where you're angle is on this - a lame effort to denigrate football because "Murica!"
