Thank you for the positive welcome. If the community is anything like you imply, it might be a good transition.

We do plan on staying in law enforcement. I have looked at the area's surrounding law agencies and was shocked when I saw that the officers make about 1/2 of what I do as a 911 operator. But, then again most people are saying the cost of living is cheaper so if that's the case, I hope we'll be ok.

I used the word hate because I was referencing all over the dozens of posts I saw from the bitter crowd that moved there and then moved away due to them feeling "hated" because they were "outsiders" However, I am with you on the positive attitude. I am of the mind that if I go with an open mind and try to assimilate rather than change the setting, we will be fine.

You seem like a nice person that has an open mind. That should be all it takes to move and have a great experience.

Don't mean to be snippy - what I meant was moving from one state to another in the USA, is not exactly culture shock. If I was in Target and met someone from CA, I'm not going to drop dead with shock - or "hate you." This is a military town and University town - what does that tell you?

Yankees? How many old movies have you been watching recently? The Civil War is over. I am from Brooklyn NY and live in Lake City, SC(hour from the beach). Just as long as you do expect to hang off the walls, you and your fam will be just fine. People saying "Hello", will take a little getting used too

My question to you would be, then, how often do you get out of the house? I don't think a day goes by that I don't hear 'yankee' used derogatorily.

Wow. I guess living in a larger metro area has lulled me into forgetting how much hostility remains in the lesser developed parts of the state. Here in Greenville I almost believe there are definitely more Northern transplants than local natives. Fortunately we don't hear that garbage here.

I'm a New Jersey native and yes, I occasionally hear people joke about "yankees", but unless you're in an isolated rural area there will be people from all over. I always joke that Richland County is a misplaced Northeastern U.S. county that got plopped down in South Carolina. I can't speak for the rest of the state, but it sure isn't a big deal in Columbia.

Even in Columbia I've been ignored and informally refused service when wearing one of my Ohio St. shirts or hats. And it has to be that because people are generally surprised to find out I'm from that region (southern Ohio/northern WV).
