My husband & I are thinking about relocating to the Carolina but we're not sure where we would like to settle. We're thinking of moving in 3 years after our youngest graduates from high school so local schools wouldn't be an issue for us.

We are active boaters & waterskiers so we were would like to be near a lake but we do not want to be in a subdivision. In fact, we would rather be off the beaten path, so to speak. On the other hand, there's also the issue of employment so I was thinking we should be fairly close to a city. I have been doing some research but there seems to be too many choices. Does anyone have any suggestions of where we might want to focus? Any feedback would be appreciated.

SC has its fair share of lakes. Being that you want to be fairly close to a city, two that I would recommend would be Lake Wylie (not too far from Rock Hill or Charlotte) and Lake Murray (not too far from Columbia). I'm not sure how close the rest are to sizable cities, but I know that the two I mentioned would pretty much satisfy that criterion.

I live in Murrells Inlet (about 10 miles South of Myrtle Beach). We have the ocean, the creek, and the intercoastal waterway. All great areas for boating and waterskiing. I think this is great because you aren't stuck with the same body of water. If you get bored, you can always put your boat in a different place. We have lots of free public boat ramps. If you'd like any info on the Real Estate market here, just let me know...that is what I do. Good luck to you!

Thanks for the feedback...what about the hurricanes? I think I would like to be closer to the coast but we live in a flood plain now and my husband is worried about going from one natural disaster worry to another.

Hurricanes are much less of a threat in the Columbia and Rock Hill/Charlotte areas, as their inland locations insulates them a bit.
