I will say Aiken is the best one with it's tree lined downtown area and a lot of jobs for a small town with Savannah River Site nearby, and downtown Augusta not too far away. Hartsville at #2 mostly b/c of the lake, and decent emplyers like Progress/Duke Energy and Sonoco.

Curious what you guys think. I grew up in Florence, then went to Clemson, lived in Greenville twice, Aiken, Columbia, and Charleston, and i worked in spartanburg while in greenville, so I know all the towns in the state from an insider perspective.

Lots to choose from. Not sure if Anderson is too big by SC standards to be considered a "small town", but it would be right up there on my list along with Aiken and Beaufort.

I would say Anderson is a medium sized city by SC standards, along with Florence. Anderson has a lot more restaurants than Hartsville and Aiken, although AIken has attracted more in recent years.

I like anderson a lot too and i use to go over there a good bit when i was at Clemson. I'd take it over aiken or hartsville but not a whole lot of jobs there outside of manufacturing.

i was a little disappointed by Beaufort, it seemed a little dumpy / seedy, and didn't seem like they had any chain restaurants outside of an outback. I thought it would be a little bigger. it could be a cool town if they did some stuff with it.

According to the latest census, Aiken has nearly 30,000 people and Anderson has around 26,000. That would make Aiken larger, yet it is a "small town" compared to Anderson? I'm from Aiken and would love to move back. I don't consider Aiken small at all by SC standards. To me, somewhere like Edgefield, Abbeville, or Barnwell would be a "small town."

well, anderson seemed to have more stuff for some reason, probably proximity to Clemson, but aiken has obtained more restaurants/stores over the 8 years since i been gone.

i wish i hadnt quit my job at SRS, i appreciate aiken more now then I did back then. i see they got a nice new ymca over near the hospital, 5 guys burgers, longhorn and some other restaurnts.

dude, you live in lexington? my parents have a house out there on the lake. lexington seems a lot like aiken. i'm surprised somebody would hate lexington if they like aiken.

Those 2 are worlds apart in my opinion. Aiken's downtown puts Lex to shame. Traffic in Aiken is nowhere near the congestion of Lex. People are nicer and friendlier in Aiken. Aiken has a mall, Lex does not. Aiken has more chain restaurants, Lex doesn't even have an Outback or a Red Lobster. I like walking Aiken's downtown with many local bars, restaurants, shops and a brewery. Can't do that in Lex.

it is my understanding lexington is about to get a new outdoor mall with a movie theatre. I was surprised at the lack of restaurants but all that stuff is in Irmo right across the dam.

traffic on whiskey road used to be pretty horrible, probably not lexington level. they need a bypass around downtown to the interstate.

you could work in lex and commute to aiken, that's not really that bad of a commute.

I used to think Whiskey Road, the 118 Bypass, and Aiken-Augusta Highway were a little bad when I was in Aiken, but that was before I had to deal with 378, 1, and 6 in Lexington. I actually left my job here and commute back to Aiken for work now. I just can't sell our house here. If it doesn't sell by next summer, I'll guess we'll look into renting it out and then moving.
