I would have thought the addition of Anderson County to the Greenville-Mauldin-Easley-Anderson MSA would have made that MSA's GDP a little higher than Columbia's.
Cool stuff. And yeah I was about to say that the GDP is relative to the overall Metro population rankings but despite Greenville having ~60,000 more residents it still ranks behind Columbia. But then again metros with comparable size (but larger) than Columbia: Knoxville, Baton Rouge, Grand Rapids all larger GDP's.
This is good for Columbia. Although it is a one year statistic, it clearly shows that only 2 "pockets of prosperity" in SC is a myth not supported by fact. And, looking out on a longer term trend, this is not an anomaly. Columbia is the leader with deposits in SC, has consistent strong growth and has a good base of diversified industry to build upon.
The "two pockets" of prosperity in SC has always been a myth, and never been backed up by any objective fact. Its always been idiots yelling from the bell tower, which if you wait long enough I know we will hear from them again soon.

Baton Rouge's status as a Mississippi River port and the energy/petrochemical sector are probably what put its GDP ahead of Columbia's. For Knoxville, energy also plays a role with TVA and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. SCANA is an asset for Columbia for sure, but it can't quite match up to those energy-related entities in Baton Rouge and Knoxville. Not too sure about what drives Grand Rapids's economy.
