My husband and I are African American and we own some land in Oconee County (Westminster, SC). We are eager to build on the land and move from MD but I am very, very concerned about racism, KKK and daily living in SC. I have not shared my concerns with my husband as he is very proud and believes we should be treated fairly just as we treat others but I know that's not always the case.

We 2 boys, a 5 yr old and 20 yr old in college and I just want a nice home in a welcoming town. the question is will Westminster welcome us? Is this a nice place to live and raise a family without fear of issues related to our race?

Thanks

Hi...you might want to post this on the South Carolina forum where you will probably get more responses from people who live in the Westminster area. Good luck!

I don't see any problem. But I'm curious about one thing. If you are so concerned, why did you buy land there before you knew about the area?

There are many interracial couples down here. Although I don't live in Westminster, which is rather rural. The southern stereotypes drive me nuts. I have mixed kids. Was married interacially and still date that way. No problems.

Westminster is Upstate. You might get better responses posting in the Greenville/Spartanburg forum. I don't know anything about Westminster but you wouldn't have a problem in much of this area.

I visited Sandvik Corp there several years ago on business, they're the big employer in town. Other than the fact that the town and area around it are a bit backwater-ish, I didn't perceive that there were any racial tensions and whatnot. Just a pleasant, and very small, town with a lot of nice people.

Seems like a nice, quiet, quaint place to live, just a bit off the beaten path.
