Notice how Carolina Knight posted about Bi-Lo closing on 5/11 but it didn't make it onto SC Now or the Morning News until 5/16. When I saw the headline, I thought they were referring to the Pamplico Hwy store. But no...as usual, they were just a week late. I swear to God, if it wasn't for reporting on fund-raiser raffles and other such feel-good journalism, the paper would barely fill a page. And when there is a story like this that readers are actually interested in, they report on it after most of the shelves are already bare.
BI-LO #5593, 2640 West Palmetto Street, Florence, South Carolina 29501-5928
It could take several days for the closing of a major store (i.e. department store, supermarket) to make the news.
I did not project BI-LO #5593 to close. Seeing how Southeastern Grocers, parent company of BI-LO, is closing stores that are underachieving or have expiring leases that are not being renewed, I can understand the decision to close BI-LO #5593.
BI-LO #5550, Independence Center, 500 Pamplico Highway, Florence, South Carolina 29505-6012, opened in 1999. If it is on a twenty-year lease, the lease should expire in 2019.
IGA/KJ's Market #160, 900 East Ashby Road, Florence, South Carolina 29506-7323
Has anyone heard IGA/KJ's Market #160 in Quinby may be closing? Its pharmacy department closed last year. I do not know if any other service departments have closed. Quinby and other areas north and northeast of Florence may not be receptive to being a grocery desert.
Its quite surprising that Florence still does not have a Publix yet.
My guess is there is a concern with already having a Harris Teeter or perhaps oversaturation of the area they would like to be.
It seems like on the west side of town you have an oversaturation of grocery stores and hardly any on the other parts of town...(Piggly Wiggly, Harris Teeter, Wal-Mart, Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market, Lidl,Food Lion, KJs, formerly BiLo). I would also throw out that the Food Lions on N Cashua and Second Loop also help to serve some of the W. Florence areas as well.
Thats a ton of stores around one part of town that probably has a population of under 20k.
Publix has been further expanding in South Carolina into Georgetown and Horry counties. I doubt Florence is going unnoticed. Its arrival could assist with the departure of weaker and inferior supermarket participants like BI-LO.
Florence should be capable of having a population over 20,000.

Florence overall has a population over 20k but I would make an estimate that the West Florence area (basically Five Points and to the West) would be somewhere around 20k and has close to 8 grocery stores while the rest of town has somewhere between 3-4. Obviously that side of town is a bit more populated but still seems like its over saturated a bit.
I think Florence could certainly support a Publix but I think the right spot has yet to present itself yet.
Whole Foods, TJs, Lowes Foods and Fresh Market may be not be feasible there but a Publix certainly would be.
I project Publix will arrive and BI-LO will depart.
That would make sense. I could see a Publix going in where the BiLo on Pamplico Hwy is or perhaps near the corner of Irby and Second Loop. That area is convenient to South Florence as well as parts of West Florence and the Cherokee Rd. area.
BI-LO #5550, Independence Center, 500 Pamplico Highway, Florence, South Carolina 29505-6012, could be move in ready for another supermarket with a pharmacy department utilizing the pharmacy drive thru. Carolinas Hospital System, 805 Pamplico Highway, Florence, South Carolina 29505-6019, is nearby, a plus for a pharmacy needing patients to have prescriptions filled.
I am hearing speculation Publix may be opening its first Florence store on a former Winn-Dixie site.
Winn-Dixie had two stores in Florence when it exited in 2004:
Winn-Dixie #2115, 124 South Cashua Drive, Florence, South Carolina 29501-4002
Winn-Dixie #2116, Freedom Square, 1611 South Irby Street, Florence, South Carolina 29505-3411
Winn-Dixie #2115 was originally a Kroger.
