I'll still say Florence is the way to go.
Another small town that I would go with is Hartsville

Easy Interstate Access
1 Hour to Myrtle Beach
1 Hour to Columbia
~2 Hours to Charlotte
~2 Hours to Charleston

I left fort jackson in Columbia and got to Sullivan's island in an hour and 45mins. So its possible. Add in traffic then you looking over 2 hours but if it's no traffic then it's easily under 2
