Both Camden and Ridgeway have charming downtowns and are not too far from Columbia for entertainment and shopping. Here is a picture of the world's smallest police station in Ridgeway's downtown area:

However, Camden is more than one hour from the ocean.

Beaufort!!! Great small town (13,000) with a historic Main Street. Only 18 miles to Hunting Island State Park, where you will find Trip Advisors #14 of the top 25 beaches. Beaufort is also currently in the lead for Coastal Livings top 10 happiest seaside towns. Has a very active arts community, along with an International Film Festival. And if all that isn't enough, Charleston and Savannah are an easy drive away.
Northerners will have no problem here, as there are plenty of transplants.

110%

Look at Summerville, SC. Just north of Charleston, SC. You get the small town with access to some of the best culture, history, and food in the south. Plus your much less than an hour a way from the beach. And that's from you door to toes in the sand.

Summerville or Beaufort are the only ones that I can think of 1 hour or less from the beach. Maybe Conway, i think it has a fairly nice downtown area and tennis center along a river, and maybe Walterboro.

I'd recommend Florence but if you need a yuppified downtown area Florence won't do. Florence wins for traffic and will be much more affordable than Summerville or Beaufort with more restaurants and stores as well.

You need to remember that the south is not the north and their ideas and way of life is different. For one the pace is much slower. Don't expect the people to be constantly on the go. Take a step back and breath and enjoy life. 2. Manners. People in the south have more manners and please don't get offended just because someone called you ma'am or sir. It does not mean you're old or anything. It is a sign of respect. Also have respect for others. You may not think you're not being rude but you are. If someone says hi, how y'all doing? Respond in kind.

I only say these because this what I learned when living in Columbia. And I have lived up north in Ct and I live in Md now. One of the things I miss is the respectfulness that people have there and their kindness. I had many people who didn't know me that well who helped me out when I needed it. I'm not saying that people up north aren't kind but northerners come off more brazen and confrontational then southerners.

I never understood this platitude about southerners not being on the go. Life down south just as fast paced as anywhere else, just a little less traffic than the north.

I think the slow pace is more patience than anything. Up north people are always in a hurry. Gotta go, go, go and anybody that inhibits them from getting where they want to gets in the way. That may be why road rage is such an issue up here. People get very agressive and agitated very easily. I can't tell how many people cut me off or refuse to allow me to yield into traffic everyday on my way to work. Unfortunately this behavior sometimes passes over into peoples interactions withothers.
